Area of operation: the Protected Landscape Area, the districts of Humenné and Medzilaborce
The Eastern Carpathians Protected Landscape Area forms the northwestern borderland part of the territory of the former Protected Landscape Area that has not been incorporated into Poloniny National Park. The area is underlain by flysch formations, consisting predominantly of claystones and sandstones.
The area is dominated by dense forests, which are the landscape’s main eco-stabilising feature and provide a suitable habitat for flora and fauna dependent on the forest environment. Within its small-scale protected areas, natural fir-beech forests are still preserved on the flysch slopes of the Laborecká vrchovina highlands. Their rich herbaceous cover includes mountain fescue, hairy blackberry and marigold.
The bog-marsh plant communities are of great value, with a significant presence of sphagnum mosses, hairy sedge, Lobel’s bog-asphodel and blue bog-asphodel. As for species native to the Eastern Carpathians, Sojákov’s milkwort is found here.
The native forest stands also provide a suitable habitat for protected and endangered animals, including, for example, the wolf, lynx, bear, otter, long-tailed owl, black stork and other species.
