Breeding and rehabilitation centres

List of breeding and rehabilitation centres

The network of rescue facilities for sick, injured, harmed or dead protected animal species (animals in need) in the Slovak Republic currently comprises 25 facilities for the rescue of protected animal species, of which 20 are state-run and 5 are non-state facilities.

The State Nature Conservancy of the Slovak Republic (ŠOP SR) provides care for sick, injured or otherwise harmed protected animal species through a network of rescue facilities, comprising 14 breeding facilities and 4 rehabilitation stations. It also arranges the collection and transport of reported animals in need, covers the costs associated with their care, receives reports of protected animals that have been found, determines the appropriate way of dealing with them, and maintains records in accordance with applicable legislation.

These responsibilities of ŠOP SR arise from amendments to the relevant binding legislation, in particular Act No. 543/2002 Coll. on Nature and Landscape Protection, as amended.

ŠOP SR also provides care for sick, injured and rehabilitated protected animal species also outside regular working hours and on days off through an on-call service, including emergency response call-outs, in close cooperation with the 112 emergency service.
